What you need to know about thyme

Thyme is directly linked with the Greek countryside. It is a small Mediterranean herb with intense flavor and aroma, but also with many healing properties that have been known since antiquity. The aroma of leaves is due to the presence of essential oil, and is the source of the medicinal properties of the plant.

There are dozens of thyme varieties, many of which are in the wild. However, there are varieties that have an ornamental character.

In ancient times the thyme was called "thymos", which comes from the word "thio", meaning sacrifice. This is because the thyme was burnt on the altars with the other incense.

One of the most well-known properties of thyme is that it cures cough and bronchitis. Also, many Mediterranean peoples used it as a natural antibiotic, sparing the wounds with essential oil.

Thyme essential oil has significant antifungal and antimicrobial activity. It also has antioxidant activity. The substances involved in this capacity are thymol and carvacrol.

Another well-known feature is that it gives spiritual clarity and stimulates the nerves. It is considered effective for digestion and combats irritable bowel syndrome (spastic colitis).

To prepare a drink, boil it in water and as soon as it comes down from the fire, leave it for about ten minutes in the briquette before using it. Even more effective is the essential oil.

Like with any medicine or herb, we need not to exceed the permissible quantity, because the constant use can cause overactive thyroid or even poisoning, symptoms of which are vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea and heart depression.
